On December 18, the “Home Appliance Open Innovation Symposium―The Future brought by ECHONET Lite―” was held at Keio University (Mita Campus). It was sponsored by the Keio University Cyber Civilization Research Center (CCRC) and cosponsored by the ECHONET Consortium.
At the symposium, Dr. Jiro Kokuryo, Vice-President of Keio University, gave an opening speech. He later gave a presentation titled “Philosophy behind the establishment of the Keio University Cyber Civilization Research Center: A center for identifying and resolving problems in the IoT/AI age”.
Then, Dr. David Farber, co-director of the CCRC, gave a keynote speech titled “A new Internet world: The nature of IoT innovation”. Dr. David Farber is a distinguished professor and specialist of computer science and public policy, and he is also known as the father of internet.
Dr. David Farber took office as co-director of CCRC in April of this year. He was recently awarded the title of fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), which is considered as the highest honor that an American scientist can receive.
Katsuhiko Hiramatsu, Representative Director of the ECHONET Consortium, then gave a presentation on the goals and basic policy of the “ECHONET 2.0 vision” being studied by the Strategy Building Working Group (established in May of this year).
Later in the symposium, Dr. Masaki Umejima, Project Associate Professor at the CCRC, served as a moderator for a lively panel discussion involving the audience on the topic “ECHONET Lite in the IoT age”.
Before the panel discussion, other presentations were given by IEC ambassador Mr. Richard Schomberg, Dr. Sureswaran Ramadass, and Yohei Matsuda, Director of the Information Economy Division, Commerce and Information Policy Bureau at METI.
In addition to the three panelists, Dr. David Farber (who gave the keynote speech), Dr. Masao Isshiki (Professor in the Department of Home Electronics Development on the Faculty of Creative Engineering at the Kanagawa Institute of Technology), Katsuhiko Hiramatsu (Representative Director of the ECHONET Consortium), and Tatsumi Miyazaki (Chief Examiner of the Strategy Building Working Group at the ECHONET Consortium) joined the enthusiastic panel discussion.
The symposium wrapped up with Dr. Masaki Umejima’s brief summary of the panel discussion after the lively discussion.

After the symposium was over, a reception was held at another venue.
Dr. David Farber, Mr. Richard Schomberg, Dr. Sureswaran Ramadass, and Dr. Masao Isshiki participated in the reception.
Dr,David Farber and Prof.Masao Isshiki gave a speech at the reception and ECHONET Representative Director Katsuhiko Hiramatsu proposed a toast. The participants enjoyed the friendly atmosphere and became better acquainted.
Finally, as a medium-tightening, Mr. Takahiro Toyama, Information Policy Planning and Coordinating Officer, Information Economy Division, Commerce Information Policy Bureau, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, gave us a word with expectation for ECHONET. And Professor Umejima gave us the words of successful completion and expectation of the future.
